Tour program

Sights: Pyatigorsk — Vicinity of Elbrus Mountain — Narzan Valey — Essentuki — Kislovodsk

Day 1

— Meeting the tour guide at the airport of Mineralnye Vody. Transfer to Pyatigorsk.

Sightseeing tour in Pyatigorsk, the Emperor’s mineral water springs that got known throughout the whole of Russia thanks to the Emperor Peter I. the program includes: Proval lake, Aeolian Harp gazebo, Academic Gallery – an outstanding piece of architecture built on the spot where the first spring intended for drinking was opened, the Eagle sculpture — a symbol of the Caucasian Mineral Waters, Diana’s grotto, Flower Garden park, and Lermontov’s Gallery. However, first of all, Pyatigorsk is the town of Lermontov. He was here five times. For the first time, Lermontov came to Caucasus as a child of ten years only along with his grandmother E.A.Arsenyeva. She would often bring the weak and sickly boy for treatment “on the mineral waters”. Even back then, the beauty of the area, natives of Caucasus with their customs and traditions, the magnificence of the two-headed Elbrus struck Mikhail Lermontov’s imagination. It was the Caucasus where Lermontov wrote such of his works now known to the whole of the world as “A Hero of Our Time”, “The Lay Brother”, “The Demon”, “The Runaway”.

Then, the guests will walk through Lermontov’s places: Lermontov public garden, the place of the duel of M.Yu.Lermontov and N.S.Martynov. The guests will have a tour in the museum “Lermontov’s House”. Here, the guests immerse themselves in the air of poetry and the old time of which many details, items of past ages, paintings remind, as well as Lermontov’s poems. Some of unique items were delivered to the museum from other places. For instance, the writing desk and the armchair were sent form Lermontov’s apartment in Saint-Petersburg.

During the tour, the guests will also taste three types of mineral water: alcalinous, acidulous, and sulphurous. The nature gifted this small town with a rare variety of mineral springs good for treatment. There are more than 40 mineral springs different in term of the chemical composition and water temperature.

The first spring was discovered by doctor Friedrich Haass in 1809 on the spot of the Academic Gallery. He noticed that Cossacks’ horses drank the water with pleasure, and the water “recovered the animals’ sheen and vivacity”. Previously, people only took baths at the resort. The first wooden bathing huts appeared in the late 18th century. In 1803, Emperor Alexander I issued an order on imposing the State-wide significance on the Caucasian Mineral Waters and the necessity of their development.  In Caucasus, the Russian elites were treated, as well as such outstanding personalities as Mikhail Lermontov, Alexander Pushkin, Mikhail Glinka, Ilia Repin, Vissarion Bekinsky, Lev Tolstoy, Nikolay Pirogov, Sergei Esenin, Anna Akhmatova, Fyodor Shalyapin, Mikhail Bulgakov, Vladimir Mayakovsky, and many others.

Lunch in a café in the town.

Tour to the temple complex of St. Peter and St. Paul (Essentuki).  Within 15 years, many sites were built in the grounds of the complex: St. Peter and St. Paul Church, Assumption Church, Bethlehem Cave, Trinity Chapel, Ascension Chapel, Arch Chapel.
The complex is crowned with a 22-meter sculptural Image of Christ the Resurrected. A young park gratifies with the green of maples, lindens, and an abundance of flowers.

The present-day looks of the downtown Kislovodsk primarily shaped up during the 19th – early 20th centuries. The older part of the town features a unique architectural image and is like an open-air museum. Many dozens of both local and metropolitan, eminent and unnamed Russian architects contributed to the creation of the outstanding ensemble of the resort town. The contribution of the Bernardazzi brothers from Italy in the architectural development of Kislovodsk is invaluable.  The Bernardazzi brothers took part in the construction of Saint Isaak Cathedral in Saint-Petersburg and the formation of the image of that city in general. They designed and built the Narzan Gallery in the Gothic style, and Saint Nicolas Cathedral. In the 20th century, due to an increased interest in Kislovodsk as a resort town, the Russian and Soviet elites began building their dachas, boarding houses, and hotels there.
